My Monthly Must-haves: January

The New Year definitely started without me. I was barely over the horror of 2017 before 2018 was well on its way. Thank heavens I’ve managed to scrape together a Monthly Must-haves for the beginning of the year!

I’ve tried to include a nice mix of makeup and personal care items this month, as I was able to try out quite a few new products.

Lush perfume in What Would Love Do? 30ml – R245.00

I’ve been eyeing Lush’s perfumes ever since they released a number of new ones towards the end of last year. While it was quite a toss-up between What Would Love Do? and Sun (which was not new), this guy eventually won.

The scent is incredibly unique and most definitely not my usual style. It’s a musky, sweet smell that really cannot be explained further. Every time I wear it, it smells different, and I get guaranteed compliments.

It lasts ALL day (and night, and then through the next day, survives the shower) and I only need one spray on my wrists and one on my neck behind my hair. It can get a little overwhelming if you use any more.

Mavala Nail Colour Crème in 288 Ginza 5ml – R45.00

I love these little guys. The colour range from Mavala is fantastic, the bottles are so small and cute, and they apply smoothly without drying out too soon. I have also seen them marked down at my local Dischem, so take a look next time you pass by.

The colour Ginza is pretty in the bottle, but beautiful on the nails. It’s a nice warm purple shade with teeny tiny gold reflects. They don’t show up enough to make this glittery though, which I like. They are very pigmented too, and one application would suffice.

The only gripe I do have about Mavala polish is that it takes an age to dry. I have yet to actually get my nails to dry before I smudge in some way shape or form while wearing these polishes. I’m not sure if I am too hasty, or apply my next coat too quickly, but a girl only has so much time to wait for her nails to dry, you know?

Avène Xera Calm Lipid-Replenishing Cleansing Oil 400ml – R230.00

I recently did a little Avène first impressions on the blog, and I’m happy to say that my enthusiasm for this product has only grown since then.

This gentle cleanser is great for removing makeup in the shower, or simply as a face wash. It leaves my skin soft and doesn’t dry me out. It comes in a gigantic pump bottle that I will have to leave to my future children, as I don’t see myself finishing it in the foreseeable future. At least they will have lovely skin too.

I’m still looking to try out more products from Avène, so I would greatly appreciate some recommendations from you guys as to what I should pick up next.

L’Oréal Pure Riche Nourishing and Taming Shampoo and Conditioner 250ml – R139.00

This is my new favourite hair combination! The scent is a luxurious almond-y smell that lasts into the day. The shampoo leaves my hair squeaky clean and the conditioner is thick and moisturising. My hair definitely air dries better after using these two together and there is a lot less frizz.

They’re from L’Oréal’s more expensive drugstore range, so I wouldn’t exactly call them cheap, but they’re fairly priced. You get a nice volume that lasts easily over a month, and if you’re able to catch them at Clicks during their three for two sale, you can technically get them for R93.00 each.

I’m definitely going to pick up the mask from the same range next time I need to repurchase this duo, I’d be interested to see if it works as well.

L.A. Girl Pro BB Cream HD Beauty Balm in Fair 30ml – R64.95

I’m going to be honest, I haven’t even owned this product for a week, but I can already tell that it’s a favourite! I’ve tried to explore L.A. Girl’s range a bit further, and this was one of the items I picked up. And it’s safe to say I love it just as much as the other products I’ve tried from the brand.

At R64.95 this is an absolute steal. It comes in a pretty extensive range of colours that if anything, lack lighter shades (never thought I’d say that). The formula is very hydrating and may not be the best option for oily complexions. The coverage is quite good for a BB cream but isn’t close to full.

If you have dry to normal skin and prefer a lighter, fresh coverage, I would highly recommend this. L.A. Girl also does not test on animals, so it’s a guilt-free purchase!

And that’s it from me for January. I feel a lot more prepared for February, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year has in store for me. How did your Januaries treat you? And what were your favourite products from the month? Let me know below or find me on social media!

I love the LA Girl BB cream and at that price it’s one thing I always have in my makeup bag.
I am hearing and seeing so much about Avene, I am really keen to try some of their stuff but I’m on a bit of spend ban at the moment because I have no self control haha.
Great post and beautiful pictures as always xxx
