Splurges I Don’t Regret

“How on Earth do you pay for all of this makeup?!” This must be the question I have heard more times in the last year than any other. Firstly, my parents have poor eyesight and I am able to sneak a lot into the basket at Dischem. Secondly, I flippin work. And third and most importantly, I SPLURGE!

My willingness to spend when it comes to beauty products is a genuine problem, and has led to me forking out astronomical amounts of cash. Some big purchases were made in haste and ended up with equally big disappointment, but a lot of my splurges have been on items I use all the time and absolutely LOVE!

Zoeva Brush Set

Without a doubt the most splurgiest splurge of my entire beauty-loving life has been on my Zoeva brush set. I bought them when I was 18 and in Germany visiting family. My aunt is a shopaholic of note, but even she was horrified at the amount I paid for these brushes.

All of that being said, this purchase was a defining one in my beauty journey. It changed what I was able to use and how I was able to apply it. All of a sudden I had DIFFERENT brushes for blush and bronzer and powder and highlighter. I went from using hand-me-down brushes from my mom and aunt to venturing out into the world of beauty on my own.

All of My Perfumes

For me, a perfume is more than just a flowery smell. It’s a signature. It’s something you associate with a person, a place or a moment in your life. Each one of my perfumes has a special place in my heart for a different reason. They let me travel back in time and remember something in a way nothing else can.

I also believe that you get what you pay for when it comes to perfume. As lovely as the scents at Zara are, by the time I walk out of the shop after having tested one on my wrist, it’s vanished.  Whereas when I climb into the shower after a full day of wearing My Burberry Blush, the whole shower fills up with the scent, and I know it’s lasted throughout the day.

Jaclyn Hill x Morphe Palette

I don’t like Jaclyn Hill, but boy does she make good eyeshadow palettes. Her collaboration with Morphe was one of the most hyped releases that the makeup world has ever seen, and for good reason.

It’s as though I found everything I had ever wanted in a makeup palette right here. Beautiful pops of colour, gorgeous neutrals and buttery metallic. You can read all about my first impressions here, but if you need the bottom line: I loved it.

Kiehls Midnight Recovery Concentrate

This was the first skincare product I bought that made me, my loved ones, my wallet and the cashier go “Woah, you need to calm down”. It’s around R800… for a teeny tiny bottle of oil. That’s mad. And while I did initially have reservations as to whether this product was worth its price tag, I’ve come around and really started to adore it. It works incredibly, has a wonderful smell and absorbs quickly. I can definitely see why this concentrate has such a cult following.

MAC Mellow Moderns Palette

This was my first ever splurge on an actual piece of makeup, and it was completely out of the realm of stuff I would usually buy. About 10 out of the 15 shades were colours I would never have considered wearing before, but it forced me to try more creative looks, and really changed the way I experimented with makeup.

It ended up showing me that so many times we say “That just won’t suit me”, when in actual fact, we’ve never given the colour/clothing piece/hair cut a chance, and it ends up looking pretty damn good. So, despite being an exorbitant amount of money, this palette holds a little place in my heart.

What has been your biggest beauty splurge to date? And if you had huge amounts of money to throw around, what would be your next splurge? Let me know in the comments!
