What better way to begin a story than with an introduction? Hi, my name is Megan Smith, and while you may have guessed by the name of this blog that I spend a lot of my time indoors, there’s a lot more to me than just being perilously pale. In a strict descending order of no importance, here are a few things about me.
The gist of it: I am a 22 year old from Johannesburg South Africa and I get a kick out of all things beauty related. Whether its skincare, makeup or hair products, I love the process of discovering new and exciting items to put to the test. In an attempts to not be entirely materialistic, my other passions include photography, reading, running (okay that one was a lie) and spending my hard-earned money on candles and croissants.
Beauty brings me joy: I think the main reason beauty is such a large part of my life is that it suits the two extremes of my feelings. When I’m feeling small, pasty, podgy and unrefined, I can slip into some killer wedges, bronze away my double chin, spritz on some Chanel and feel like a million bucks, and when I’m feeling on top of the world, at peace with all of my quirks, nothing helps me express my self-love better than splurging on skincare and mountains of makeup.
For me, it’s time for coffee until it’s time for gin: My day begins with my first sip of coffee… or at least, it should. As a self-professed cappuccino connoisseur, I know a good cup of coffee when I taste one. My love for it developed during the truly trying times of my matric year, coincidentally, as did my soft spot for a good gin and tonic.
I’ve come to judge a restaurant based on how well they prepare these two staples, anywhere that serves a burnt cappuccino or a weak G and T is a place I will not be going back to anytime soon.
Organisation is key: I’m a planner, an arranger, a sorter and an A-type personality through and through. Nothing soothes my soul quite like a well-ordered desk, except maybe a perfectly formatted blog post. I function best when everything is colour-coordinated and in alphabetical order. Much to the annoyance of the more relaxed individuals in my life, everything I own has its place, and until it’s in its place, the show cannot go on.
I’m a chemical engineer: Well, almost. I’m a full-time chemical engineering student at the University of the Witwatersrand (largely the reason for me being so perilously pale). The thing that I enjoy most about my STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Maths) field is that it challenges me every day, and provides me with opportunities to better my understanding of the world.
As girls in engineering are few and far between, I am very lucky to be surrounded by such intelligent, strong and beautiful women at school. I am also fortunate to go to a university that is incredibly culturally diverse, which has made me aware of many types of beauty, internal and external, different to my own.
As for the rest, you’ll just have to learn it along the way. I hope you enjoy my rants and reviews, and if there is ever an area in which you feel I could improve, I would love to hear from you, just search Perilously Pale on any of my social media platforms.
